What is a beat license?
Beat Licensing FAQs
How can I purchase a beat?
A producer and/or beatmaker is not selling actual beats, but rather selling beat licenses.
This distinction is important because the producer still maintains ownership of the original beat. The artist who purchases the license acquires ownership rights to the new song created using the licensed beat.
The license granted to the artist includes certain rights, commonly referred to as "User Rights," which outline how the beat can be used. These User Rights are specified in the beat license agreement, which can be viewed here.
Licenses can be either non-exclusive or exclusive.
Can other artists use the beat I purchase?
Yes! Our Exclusive beats are not public; you can sign up to preview and purchase our exclusive beats.
Can I upload my song to Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube?
Absolutely! All our licenses allow commercial distribution, but each license has specific usage limitations:
- Basic Lease: 50,000 Streams
- Popular Lease: 100,000 Streams
- Premium Lease: 200,000 Streams
- Unlimited Lease: No Restrictions
- Exclusive Rights: No Restrictions
Once you exceed your license’s limits, you can upgrade at any time (see next question).
Can I upgrade my license later?
Yes! If you need to increase your streaming limits or want access to high-quality stems, you can upgrade your license by paying the difference.
Just send us a message before purchasing the upgrade to ensure a smooth process. Upgrade now!
What do I need to do before releasing my song?
Before releasing your song, there are a few key steps to ensure everything is properly registered and credited:
1. Register your song with a Performance Rights Organisation (PRO) and a publishing admin service (e.g., Unlimited Master, RouteNote, TuneCore Publishing, Distrokid Publishing, SoSoHits Publishing, etc).
2. List "The Producer" as the composer when registering your song (see details on the license agreement).
3. Credit the Producer properly on streaming platforms: Producer: FRENZY
4. Notify us so we can properly register the track on our side and help with any publishing-related matters.
Taking these steps ensures you maximise royalties and prevent potential disputes down the line.
Are your beats produced by you?
Yes! Every beat in our store is composed, arranged, produced, mixed, and mastered by us.
Sometimes, we collab with other producers, and beats are tagged accordingly.
We use a combination of live instruments (guitar, bass, piano, synths) and high-quality virtual instruments, along with a vast collection of premium drum samples we collected over the years. Occasionally, we incorporate royalty-free samples from trusted sources.
Can you provide an example of a famous artist who has used the licensing model?
Yes, many! Lil Nas X is one. He purchased a $30 lease from a 19-year-old producer from the Netherlands. That beat became “Old Town Road”, which later broke multiple records. In January 2021, the song set a record as the highest-certified song ever by the RIAA with 14x Platinum status in the U.S. It has sold over 18 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time."Read the full story here
What if I have a question that hasn’t been answered in the F.A.Q?
If you have further questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at mail@sosohits.com or reach out via social media
Yes. All our licenses on our store are non-exclusive, meaning the beat remains available for other artists to license.
This system keeps pricing affordable while allowing independent artists to access industry-quality instrumentals. If your song gains traction, there are always options to upgrade or negotiate exclusive rights in the future. Many artists have been signed after releasing songs with licensed beats!
Can I buy a beat exclusively and how does it work?
What is the difference between non-exclusive licenses and exclusive rights?
Non-exclusive licenses can be sold to multiple people, while exclusive rights mean the beat will be removed from the site once it's sold to a person.
You also obtain publishing rights with the purchase of exclusive rights.
What does a purchase include?
A basic license includes the full-length beat(s) in .mp3 format and a license agreement.
The popular license includes the full-length beat(s) in .wav format and a license agreement.
Premium licenses include the full-length beat(s) in .mp3 and .wav formats, as well as a license agreement.
Unlimited licenses include the full-length beat(s) in .mp3 and .wav format, trackouts/stems, and a license agreement.
What is the difference between MP3, WAV and Track-Outs or Stems files?
The only difference is in the audio quality and mixing flexibility.
MP3 File
Ideal for demos, songwriting, and quick releases. Includes high-quality MP3 file.
WAV File
Higher-quality audio, usually provided in 24-bit .wav format for artists planning to mix and release music professionally.
TRACK-OUT or STEMS File
Trackouts (or stems) are the individual instrumental tracks of a beat—like bass, kick, snare, piano, etc., usually provided in 24-bit .wav format. This gives you or your engineer flexibility in mixing or customising the production.
